Abstract: This article focuses on a turf war between Comcast and Viacom over children's television programming. Viacom, home to Noggin and Nickelodeon, is the reigning champ of preschool cable. Comcast is new to the game. It launched Sprout network in partnership with PBS, Sesame Workshop, and others. Their strategies differ, though. Comcast believes the appeal of its on-demand programming will discourage viewers from going to satellite services, and did not demand a share of merchandising revenue. To Viacom, the notion of sacrificing merchandising rights is unthinkable -- half the revenue generated by Nick Jr. is from merchandising.
