Chip Donohue offers this advice:

In today's high tech world, educators need to keep pace with rapid changes and dramatic improvements in technology tools for teaching, communicating, exchanging ideas, sharing resources, networking and advocacy, education, training, and professional development.  In the June 2005 issue of Technological Horizons in Education (T.H.E. Journal), Laura Turner identifies 20 must-have basic skills for educators, along with web sites for each skill providing easy access to information and tutorials for skill building.

The 20 essential skills included a number of particular interest to eTeachers and eLearners, including:

• Word processing

• Web navigation

• E-Mail management

• File management & Windows Explorer

• Downloading software form the Web

• Online learning platforms

Turner also identifies skills related to new technology tools that have become essential for educators, including:

• Electronic presentations

• Digital cameras

• Videoconferencing

• Scanners

• PDAs
