In preparation for a panel discussion on "Culture and Leadership" at the 2005 World Forum, Patty Hnatiuk interviewed World Forum participants from eleven nations about their views on leadership. The results of these interviews not only shaped the World Forum session but they were also used by Patty in preparing an article for the May 2005 issue of Exchange. In one part of the article she shared a theory proposed by Roslyn A. Duffy and Dr. Lily Wong that there are basic characteristics that point out the differences between how Eastern and Western cultural expectations of leaders differ:

In western cultures the four key values that are promoted are:
* independence (go it alone)
* individualism (be unique)
* competition (go for the gold)
* involvement (them and us thinking)

In eastern cultures the four key values that are promoted are:
* interdependence (all together)
* collectivism (blend in)
* collaboration (team first)
* partnership (we and ours thinking)
