If we get kids involved in adult activities, that’s play for kids. And then they associate chores with a fun, positive activity. They associate it with playing.

Starting today, the World Forum Foundation is launching its campaign to promote ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the United States. Pam Boulton, who is leading this campaign for the World Forum, observes on the CRC section of the World Forum website:
"It is time to advocate for the U.S. ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child!
"I attended the World Forum on Early Care and Education in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in June 2009. Like the rest of the 650 delegates from 76 nations, I spent nearly four days surrounded by people from all over our planet who shared my passion for children and families. The topic of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was addressed frequently and passionately by a number of speakers including Sasa Milic, Montenegro; Youssef Hajjar, UK and Syria; Agnes Akosua Aidoo, Ghana; and a member of the UN Committee on the CRC. As a citizen of the United States, I found myself deeply disturbed by the fact that the U.S. is one of only two countries in the UN that has not ratified this important treaty while 193 countries have been willing to make this commitment to their children. Somalia is the other country that has not ratified, but on November 20, 2009 they announced that they will be doing so soon.
"I believe that ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is an important part of being a global citizen. It is time to ask — intentionally and insistently — that our legislators ratify this convention and that we take our place among those who agree to promote and protect children's best interests."

I hope that you and others who read these comments will become more active in the campaign to ratify the Children's Rights Convention (CRC). Please go to
www.childrightscampaign.org, ( http://www.childrightscampaign.org,/ )
for there you will find the information, tools, and enthusiasm you will
find most useful in helping with the ratification. In particular, the
Campaign needs individuals and organizations to sign up as supporters.
As you may have heard, there is a very vocal opposition to the CRC's
ratification from the far right, especially a group calling itself the Parent
Rights Coalition. They have introduced a Senate Resolution to indicate opposition to ratification, and they claim to have almost enough co-sponsors (34 needed) to stop ratification. They are planning large display ads in prominent newspapers of States with Senators who are not co-sponsors sometime in August.
So now is definitely the time for you to write your Senators, and perhaps your newspapers as well, to support ratification.

I am not surprised at all that the US has not ratified this treaty. The World Health Organization (WHO) adopted the International Code of Breast Milk Substitutes in 1981 and the US was one of the very last nations to agree to abide by the Code. In the case of the WHO Code, artificial baby milk manufacturers have a very strong lobbying voice in our government and our nation has a pattern of supporting big money before people. No doubt, money is at the bottom of this issue, also.

It was disturbing to learn that USA has not yet ratified this important issue. We need to put our signature where our mouth is. We need to walk the walk and talk the talk.

Where can we read the complete information on what this agreement includes? I have read that one of the main reasons the US has not joined in agreement is that some of it would violate rights of parents. I hope we don't just join the band wagon because it sounds like a good thing without thoroughly researching what the big picture is.

BTW - the USA *has* signed and ratified the 2 optional protocols on child soldiers and prostitution. It has signed [President Clinton] but not ratified CRC.

I would urge everybody to
support World Forum's work to get the US to ratify the Human Rights Treaty document. Here is a good reason.
The rest of the world has long included children's rights. But, better still, the document now recognizes that children's rights might not include the language that needs to be different for the youngest children, so that the agreement does not include some things that are designed only for children older than seven. The
treaty also has a mechanismthat requires member states to report their compliancewith the provisions, and the member state then gets a comment back on whether they are fully compliant. This gives us a new strategy!

Please note that several US organizations have spent many years working on getting the CRC ratified in the US. These include the Campaign for the U.S. Ratification of the CRC; OMEP-USA,
ACEI, NAEYC, CWLA, etc. I was disappointed that these and other organizations were not mentioned in Pam's opening EED.
