We are story. All of us. What comes to matter then is the creation of the best possible story we can while we’re here; you, me, us, together.

Based on last summer's reading list, I went looking for a book and ended up selecting a new book by the same author: Sonata for Miriam by Linda Olsson. The book includes scenes from New Zealand, Poland, and Sweden; loss including identity and love; and ends on a happy note.
Child Care Resources

Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth--beautiful writing and a remarkable story about slavery, the Middle Passage and the devastating effects of greed.
Also, The Great Brain Debate by John E. Dowling.
SS. Peter and Paul School

"Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell has also written "Blink" and "The Tipping Point" - all provocative reading for those interested in thinking more deeply about thinking, learning, and the many variables that contribute to an individual's success.

I enjoyed an oldie but goodie that had me fascinated...and at times laughing, such insights! If you haven't read it yet try The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, wonderful. I've also been working with The Genius of Play by Sally Jenkinson, A Mandate for Playful Learning In Preschool by Hirsh-Pasek, Golinkoff, Berk & Singer and Taking Back Childhood by Carlsson-Paige for inspiration for the new school year.
Thomas Learning Centers
Denver, CO, United States
The Help by Kathryn Stockett--Jackson MS in 63-- a young woman of privilege interviews attempts to interview black maids to find out what it is "really like" to work for white women. Both sides are shown and the story is one in which you fall into with no desire to get out.
Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos -2004, but still wonderful. About building our own families, guilt, restitution and love.

Another couple of summer reads are "The Flying Troutmans" by Miriam Toews about a very different road trip and "A Spot of Bother" by Mark Haddon about the anxiety of retirement and family dynamics. Read on!

I don't know why this doesn't work for me. I've posted twice and I keep getting an error message. I want to share Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Chip Heath & Dan Heath. Good reading, useful information.
Lowell Day Nursery

I have been reading a series of books by Lisa Scottoline. Her characters are woman lawyers who are solving mysteries but with historic or societal issues as well. My favorite so far was one that dealt with Italian Americans who were sent to internment camps in WWII and the ties that had with the present. Very interesting!! Smart, funny and interesting women characters!
Childrens Lighthouse
Jacksonville, FL, United States
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle was one of my favorite books so far this year.
Children\'s Services Council
Boynton Beach, Florida, United States
I highly recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It will have you laughing and crying almost simultaneously!
Hillsborough, NC, United States
"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! (Adventures of a Curious Character)"
More than a collection of hilarious anecdotes from the life of this Nobel Prize-winning physicist, this book is an inspiring commentary on learning by understanding.
Leonardo, NJ, United States
"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett is a wonderful book. I have yet to meet anyone who has not loved it! You will not want to leave the characters you come to know.

One of the most beautiful, poignant and memorable books I have read recently is 'The Secret Scripture' by Sebastian Barry. It has deservedly won prizes.
