As early childhood educators, some of us tire quickly of red construction paper hearts and play dough sculptures that never quite dry. But for some of us, there’s something about the sight of a well-organized, thoroughly stocked arts and crafts supply closet that creates excitement and sparks our imagination. Even the righteous among us has been known to hoard arts and crafts goodies in the back corners of our classroom cabinets. Give us a rainbow of construction paper colors, pom-poms of all sizes, markers that actually write (caps included), and rows of little glue bottles never clogged by human hands, and we’re downright joyful.

Without arts and crafts the walls of our child care centers and preschools would be white, there’d be nothing to stuff in backpacks to take home, refrigerators would be bare, and attics would be empty of easel paint handprints of now grown children. Without arts and crafts we’d miss opportunities for “I did it all by myself” moments, imagination unfolding, sensory times exploding, refrigerator proud creations, cherished childhood memorabilia and fun. What would we do without glitter and glue?
