Extended Day Enrichment Program - United States
Program
Program Purpose
Extended Day Enrichment Program offers supervision and a variety of enrichment activities for school-age children. Services are offered before and after school; and all day during summer vacation.
Program Description
Orange County (FL) Public Schools offer before- and after-school services to 17,000 elementary children at 90 different school locations. The program enriches children's lives through educational, social, cultural, emotional, and physical development. Activities include homework time, supervised free play, art, drama, crafts, music, dance, and organized games. The curriculum is tied to academic standards to enhance academic achievement through play. Out-of-school time is focused on fun. Children don't realize that they are learning new skills and expanding their knowledge. Our activities are part of the school district's website and available to anyone with computer access (see information below).
Children come early to school and stay as late as 6 PM in the same safe, familiar setting. Media center, computer labs, music and art rooms are used not only during the school day, but before and after school as well.
School-age child care services are totally fee-supported by parent payment. The program does not received tax revenue. Scholarships are available for families with economic needs. Programs for middle school youth are supported by community collaborative grants. School age care offers a unique service to the community.
Most Unique Program Feature
After school activities are aligned with education standards--but don't tell the children. Kids just think its fun. Flying paper airplanes is a math activity when children measure distance. Shooting baskets becomes an activity in percentages and fractions. Book adventures, scavenger hunts, and drama enhance reading skills. Extended Day enrichment activities are available to anyone with internet access.
