Books that Shaped Exchange

Books that Shaped Exchange

With the March issue of Exchange, we are starting our 28th year of publication.  As we were putting that issue together, I was reflecting about our history and looking through our past 161 issues (can you believe 161 issues!).  I ran across a feature, "Books that Shaped Exchange" in our November 1995 issue.  As I looked over this list, I was struck by the fact that many of these books still continue to influence us (even though many are now out of print).  So I am going to share some of these influential books and then invite you to share books that have shaped your career.

Theodore Caplow, Managing an Organization. NY:  Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1983.

George Dennison, The Lives of Children.  NY: Vintage Books, 1969.

Peter F. Drucker, Management.  NY: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1973.

Stephanie Feeney, Doris Christensen, and Eva Moravcik. Who Am I in the Lives of Children?.  OH: Merrill Publishing Company, 1987.

Selma H. Fraiberg,  The Magic Years.  NY:  Charles Scribner's Sons, 1959.

Jonathan Kozol, Death at an Early Age.  NY: Bantam Books, 1967.

Elizabeth Prescott and Elizabeth Jones, Day Care as a Child-Rearing Environment.  DC: NAEYC, 1972.

Elwyn Richardson, In the Early World.  NY: Pantheon Books, 1964.

David Viscott, Taking Care of Business.  NY: William Morrow and Company, 1985.

Roger von Oech,  A Whack on the Side of the Head.  NY:  Warner Books, 1983.
