"Never explain.
Your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe you anyway."
- Elbert Hubbard in The Note Book
The Promise of Early
Head Start
Eager to get to the real content, I often skip over the preface in a new book.
But I happened to read the Preface in Zero to Three's new
publication, Beacon of Hope: The Promise of Early Head Start for America's
Youngest Children (www.zerotothree.org),
and I am glad I did. One of the book's editors, Joan Lombardi, used the
preface to provide a concise history of the Early Head Start legislation,
an account that provides both Joan's insider's view on the politics as an advocate,
but also her personal views as a former head start teacher.
Beacon of Hope takes a serious look at the successes and challenges
of Early Head Start with articles on the history, structure, evaluations,
specific components, and policy issues of Early Head Start. At
a time when Head Start overall is fighting for its very survival,
this book provides a much needed in-depth look at the value of the early
years component of the program.
Joan Lombardi is also the creator of the World Forum Global Leaders Project
(funded by IBM) which was successfully launched at Working
Forum Belfast last month. To learn more about Global Leaders,
