Obesity and Child Activity

"Enjoyment is not a goal, it is a feeling that accompanies important ongoing activity." - Paul Goodman in Growing Up Absurd

Obesity and Child Activity

The Association for Childhood Education International, a World Forum Alliance member, recently published a pamphlet, "Obesity and Children," which spells out, for parents and professionals, steps that can be taken to prevent obesity in young children.  One step recommended is to encourage children in engaging in physical activity.  According to the pamphlet, 48 percent of girls and 26 percent of boys (in the USA) do not exercise vigorously on a regular basis.  Many relate fitness with performance, excelling in sports, having big muscles, and being more popular.  To counter these poor attitudes toward fitness, ACEI recommends:

*  Children's television viewing and computer activity need to be balanced with physical exercise.
*  When possible, instead of taking the car, walk or ride bikes.
*  Encourage children's outdoor play.
*  If children show an interest, and it is age/stage appropriate, support their participation in sports and structured activity such as dance and karate.

The pamphlet observes: "When physical activity is naturally built into the family lifestyle, the benefits are long lasting."
