Resources for Helping Children Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion

Dear Exchange Community,

With so much division in our world today, early care and education programs and practitioners can promote a more inclusive and peaceful world by supporting young children’s deep appreciation for diversity. Exchange has a number of resources that can help. Here are three of my favorites:

1. As mentioned earlier, John Nimmo and Debbie Lee Keenan have released a wonderful film that’s available for free download: Reflecting on Anti-Bias Education in Practice: The Early Years

They have asked Exchange to create a DVD/Resource book package for anyone who is needing a DVD. We were happy to do so, and this package is now available for purchase at a low price (just enough to cover production costs).

2. Nadia Jaboneta’s beautiful book, You Can’t Celebrate That! helps educators brave the choppy waters of discussing race and religion with young children. I love the way Nadia shares her own journey so openly, with such heart.

3. Likewise, Nick Terrones’ helpful book, A Can of Worms: Fearless Conversations with Toddlers provides great support for early care and education practitioners who want to be able to answer children’s questions honestly and appropriately - even when children bring up challenging topics. Nick invites his readers to join him on an honest and heartfelt investigation of how to be respectful with young children’s wonderings.

Thank you all for the work that you do to support a new generation’s appreciation for the diversity of our world. It’s so important for our future.
