WOMEN AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

On International Women's Day, March 8, Bernard Combes at UNESCO, shared this message with us: "Our world needs to change so that we start learning to live together sustainably. If we could shrink the population of the world to a village of 100 people, the village would have 50 girls and women, and 50 boys and men. 70% of the work of the village would be done by women but they would only be paid 10 % of the village's revenue.

"Sustainable development requires the full involvement of men and women in ensuring economic, cultural and ecological vitality. UNESCO recognizes the importance of promoting gender equality in and through education. Education for Sustainable Development reorients education with a gender perspective in all subject areas and content themes. The United Nations Decade (2005-2014) of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) is aimed to achieve development that is people-centered, equitable and sustainable."
