Bethica Quinn and Rosalina Rodriguez, in their beautiful dual-language book, Treasures in the Thicket | Tesoros en el monte, write about how they supported children in creating a collaborative book. The authors tell their story in the hope that other educators might be inspired to tackle their own collaborative projects with children. They explain:
“We wanted children to have a chance to be individual contributors as they created paintings based on their knowledge of and ideas about animals. We also wanted them to be able to weave their contributions together, to share ideas based on other children’s paintings, and to paint based on other children’s ideas. We made choices in the process of setting up the cycle of painting and talking, which allowed us to strengthen messages about community. We invited small groups to talk about paintings, to demonstrate to the children that their own and their friends’ works of art were worthy of consideration and interest.”
