In his book, Living Long and Living Well, John Rosenow tells the story of how Nelson Mandela found ways to survive – and even thrive – during his long years in prison. One way was through his connections with nature, that began and were nurtured, during his earliest years of life. Rosenow explains: “During his many years in prison, Mandela’s spirit was also nurtured by his connections with nature – few and far between though they may have been, he savored each one. He often said…the tiniest connection with the natural world seemed to rekindle in him warm emotional memories of the Transki countryside of his youth.”
And in Deb Curtis’s book, Really Seeing Children, she writes that “when we observe children closely, it is obvious that they have an inborn sense of wonder and affinity for nature, which enriches their lives and ours.”
