Tell Congress to #ThinkBabies

The website, thinkbabies.org, recently announced a non-partisan campaign to help Congress focus more deeply on early childhood issues. Here’s the information shared on the website:

“Tell Congress to #ThinkBabies. In order to make babies a national priority, our elected leaders need to hear from you! Let them know what babies and families need to thrive.”

And in the OOB Training Kit, “Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development,” author Bisa Batten Lewis provides suggestions that early childhood professionals can share with families to help them support children’s literacy development (in an appropriate way!) from birth on. Here are a few of them:

• “Reading to baby 3-5 times a day
• Allowing baby to engage in reading with you (e.g point, turn pages, and so on)
• Actively talking with baby, with eye contact, about food, daily routine, outdoors, signs, pictures, books, and print in the environment
• Singing songs, such as ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’
• Performing finger plays, such as ‘The Itsy Bitsy Spider’
• Reciting nursery rhymes
• Talking to baby about family photos…”
