Magic of Clay

“The activity of modeling with clay, imitating objects from daily life: vessels for food, or animals from their environment, allows children to be a part of a magic world of possibilities, of being creators,” write Roxana Salazar, an architect from Bolivia, and Maria Carmen Schulze, an educator from Bolivia,  in the beautiful little book, Modeling With Children Under Six, written in both Spanish and English.

And in the book, Curriculum: Art, Music, Movement and Drama: A Beginnings Workshop Book, Cathy Weisman Topal explains:
“Clay is therapeutic. When one works with clay, a special kind of communication takes place between the hands, the clay and the imagination. It is a very personal experience. Clay is responsive. It gives immediate feedback. Anyone can make a shape in clay and, with experience, gain more skill and control in shaping clay into a desired form.”
