Is Social-Emotional Learning the Foundation for Success?

Eve Herndon, in an article on the Cornerstone University website, writes that “soft skills and emotional intelligence are quickly climbing the ranks of important and sought-after abilities across industries. Technology and business practices continue to evolve so quickly that set skills take a backseat to the ability to constantly learn new ones…From teamwork to curiosity to work ethic to empathy, today’s most qualified candidate is better at reading a room than reading a textbook…

Herndon describes a definition of social-emotional learning written by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning that includes these characteristics:

Relationship skills...
Self-management...
Self-awareness...
Social awareness...
Responsible decision-making.”
