Here’s a poem Ann Pelo and Margie Carter include in their book, From Teaching to Thinking:
“For Longing
Blessed be the longing that brought you here
And quickens your soul with wonder.
May you have the courage to listen to the voice of desire
That disturbs you when you have settled for something safe.
May you have the wisdom to enter generously into your own unease
To discover the new direction your longing wants you to take.
- John O’Donohue
And later in the book, Margie Carter writes:
“When I work with administrators who want to improve quality in their programs, I offer a challenge to expand their thinking. ‘Beyond getting accredited or improving scores in a rating system, what do you want to be known for?’ Sometimes I get push-back: ‘Do you mean, what do I think is possible?’ I make a gentle correction: ‘What would you like to imagine is possible?’”
