In his book, Cultivating Outdoor Classrooms, author Eric Nelson writes about the role outdoor classrooms can play in restoring the traditional early childhood education focus on "the whole child. It emphasizes social-emotional development and physical development by encouraging children to take the lead in developing and implementing their own activities."
Nelson goes on to describe the valuable role outdoor classrooms play in supporting "children's psychological well-being. Children who are not emotionally healthy are not as prepared for the rigor of academic programs or as advanced in the socioemotional development needed for success in school. The outdoor classroom provides rich physical and program environments in which all children can develop a strong sense of self."
