In 2012 Google launched Project Aristotle to study what makes some teams of people stumble while others soar. After analyzing hundreds of factors, it was impossible at first to find any clear pattern of what makes a great team tick. For example, somewhat unusually, the mix of personalities didn’t seem to matter at all. Finally, after extensive further study, two factors emerged that every high functioning team had in common:
A psychologically safe environment, in which team members believed they could speak their minds freely and not be embarrassed or rejected for any opinion expressed,
and
Empathy: Team members were sensitive to others’ feelings and accepting of individual points of view.
