CHILD OBESITY AND ACTIVITY

A recent issue of "WHO CARES? RECENT DEVELOPMENTS ON CAREGIVING," published online by Beverley Smith in cooperation with Kids First Parent Association of Canada, the following news on child obesity was provided:

"Dr. Mark Tremblay of the University of Saskatchewan has released a study on obesity August 14, 2003 finding that for over 7,000 children studied aged 7-11, those who watch over 3 hours of television a day have a  50% greater risk of being obese than those who watch it less. He also found that children who are encouraged to participate in group sports like soccer lose interest in exercise over time but those who are encouraged to participate in solo activities like dancing or playing basketball on the driveway are more likely to maintain a longer-term interest and benefit from exercise."
