Managing Change, Changing Behaviors

Angry people want you to see how powerful they are. Loving people want you to see how powerful YOU are.
Chief Red Eagle

In her Exchange article, "Living Change and Changing Living in Child Care Programs," Pauline Davey Zeece offers advice on how to change the behaviors and attitudes of staff, and then offers these final thoughts:

"Staff members (and directors) vary in their reactions based on situational and personality variables. No situation creates the same reaction for everyone. Few people react identically to situations each and every time. Thus, judgment about anyone's reaction type should be based on a sample of behaviors and reactions over time, rather than on an isolated behavioral incident....

"Director reaction and reaction type contribute to staff members' attitudes and behaviors. A child care program is dynamic by nature. This means all actions affect all other actions. It becomes important for an administrator to understand his reactions to critical program issues and policies and to work to ensure that such reactions enhance rather than impede a program's progress."
