The Lien Foundation in Singapore commissioned a research division of the Economist magazine to create a wellness index that ranks preschool environments in 45 countries. In a conclusion to its findings presented in Starting Well: Benchmarking Early Education Across the World the Economist concluded...
"As countries transition towards knowledge-based economies, policymakers need to consider what all can be done to develop their stock of human capital. Encouragingly, this Index highlights the growing global recognition of the importance of the whole of a child's development, rather just from the start of primary school. Those countries that do it best will position themselves well for success in the decades ahead."
In the Index, which assessed social context, availability, affordability, and quality, Nordic countries Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th, while the United States ranked 24th, Canada 26th, China 42nd, and India 45th.
