Going Green, Saving Money

"Green practices often save money, particularly over time."  These encouraging words come from environmentalist, Phil Boise, in his Exchange book, Go Green Rating Scale for Early Childhood Settings.

Some savings are long term:  "If existing structural conditions — poor ventilation, mold, furniture that release airborne chemicals, and so on — compromise the health of young children, there may be higher initial capital costs that eventually lead to lower health care expenses and operational costs."

Some savings may be more immediate:

• A one degree decrease in thermostat setting during the winter will result in a 5 percent savings in heating costs;
  
  
• Use of Energy Star products can result in utility-bill cost savings of several hundred dollars per year;
  
  
• Replacing one standard toilet with a 1.6 gallon low-flow toilet can save an average family over 160,000 gallons of water per year;
  
  
• An inefficient sprinkler system can waste tens, even hundreds, of thousands of gallons of water per year on an average American lawn.
