Child Care Goals in the UK

"The highest reward for a person's work is not what they get for it, but what they become by it." –John Ruskin

CHILD CARE GOALS IN THE UK

Megan Pacey from the Day Care Trust in the United Kingdom, makes these observations at the 2003 World Forum:

"The success of Britain's Labour Government's ambitious agendas to move families from welfare to work, raise educational attainment and eradicate child poverty in a generation all hinge on there being a modern childcare and parental leave infastructure that matches the best elsewhere in the world.  Substantial amounts of Government money are now being spent on pump-priming childcare in Britain, yet British parents continue to pick up most of the childcare bill.

"Despite a three-fold increase from 66 million pounds in 2000-2001 to over 200 million pounds by the end of the next Comprehensive Spending Cycle, most parents in Britain are no closer to seeing a growth in more quality, affordable childcare.  The sustainability of services remains as critical as ever."
