"Roughly 42 percent of all Indian children under age five suffer from malnutrition," according to a major report covered by the New York Times (January 11, 2012). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was quoted responding to the report...
"The problem of malnutrition is a matter of national shame. Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of undernutrition in the country is unacceptably high."
The report, conducted by the Naandi Foundation, did provide some good news: Levels of malnutrition have fallen by 20 percent in the last seven years. The prime minister observed that this level of progress is too slow and called for government ministries and private groups to focus on issues like the education of mothers, sanitation, hygiene, the status of women in society, and child-rearing practices.
