What Training Do Teachers Need?
I don't paint things. I only paint the difference between things.
Henri Matisse
Exchange surveys the field annually to determine current and emerging training needs for early childhood teachers. We use this feedback from you to help us set the editorial calendar for Exchange Magazine as well as to guide the development of books, Out of the Box Training Kits, and other professional development resources for teachers and directors.
When we conducted this survey in 2009, the following topics emerged at the top of the list:
- Children with challenging behaviors
- Assessment of children
- Scaffolding children's play
- Staff morale, working as a team
- Working with parents
- Conflict resolution
- Developmentally Appropriate Practice
- Communication
- Professionalism
- Curriculum application skills
What keeps adults learning is the combination of ongoing reading, dialogue, trial and error, skill development, and continual self-reflection. There are always old and new ideas to visit, mentors and models to re-examine, and adjustments to make in one's approach. The Developing Capable, Creative Teachers CD Book offers an exhaustive collection of 53 articles in PDF format offering a host of practical ideas and strategies in the following categories:
- Staff Development Basics
- Staff Development Strategies and Solutions
- Team Building Strategies and Solutions
