Board Ground Rules
There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals.
Idowu Koyenikan, Author
In Exchange's newest publication, Staying on Course: The Early Childhood Board's Guide for Success, Syretha Storey, Barbara McCreedy, and Helen Stine provide a wealth of tools and techniques for developing an effective Board of directors. One suggestion is to have the board agree to ground rules for Board meeting behavior. Here is their example of a set of ground rules...
- Attend all meetings
- Be on time
- Turn off cell phones
- Read all documents ahead of time
- Follow the agenda
- Listen and show respect
- Encourage different points of view
- Participate and ask questions
- Maintain confidentiality
- No side conversations or off-task discussions
- Remember to appreciate and acknowledge each others' efforts
- End on time.
Running a successful Board of Directors isn't easy. It takes time, effort, and planning. Staying on Course: The Early Childhood Board's Guide for Success will help them stay on course and focus on the important work they do for young children and their families, and it will alert them to pitfalls and known dangers as they navigate the early childhood landscape. In addition, in buying Staying on Course you receive free access to 35 handouts in Microsoft® Word, tools, and templates included in the book.
