Puerto Rico Supports Outdoor Education
Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.
Margaret Mead
The February, 2009 issue of Wonder describes the "Declaration Regarding Outdoor Learning Environments and Playgrounds in Puerto Rico" which was developed in concert by the Puerto Rican government, local officials, a Puerto Rican school of architecture and UNICEF. Included in the declaration are the following key points...
- Design areas that stimulate observation, creativity, exploration, manipulation, and mobility in children;
- Conduct art activities, experiences with sand and water, music and movement, stories, etc.;
- Maintain children in close contact with nature and an environment of light and fresh air and provide shade;
- Divide the space into areas that are clearly defined and identified so that all children can recognize them;
- Personalize the design with materials of our island guided by the ideas of children, their families, and staff.
