Managing Effective Teams
The secret to life is finding joy in ordinary things.
Ruth Reichl, American chef and writer
In Work & Family Life (November 2008) Dr. Bob Fisher and Dr. Bo Thomas identified the following practices that most often accompany effective teamwork:
- Mutual support and encouragement. Acknowledge efforts and accomplishments sincerely.
- Clearly defined roles. Every player should have a specific role that connects to the team's overall mission.
- Win-Win cooperation. Identify those "win-lose" situations on your team, and eliminate anything that makes it acceptable to win at someone else's expense.
- Individual competency. Successful teams are committed to personal excellence — to becoming the best they can be in their roles.
- Good communication. Team members may not agree on everything, but they need to talk to each other and resolve any issue that affects the team's performance. They also need easy access to relevant information.
