Thirty years ago when we launched Exchange magazine, we produced a flyer with the headline "What has 14 hands?" And, the answer, of course, was: a child care director. Indeed, the director does need all the hands she can get to take good care of staff supervision, customer service, curriculum planning, financial management, building maintenance, health and safety control, environmental design, and on and on.
