"Always do right.
This will gratify some people, and astonish the rest." - Mark Twain
The Year of Better Choices
David Allen has written a very practical and helpful book for managers, Ready
for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life (London:
Penguin Books, 2003). In the book he talks about making choices...
"One of my healthiest moments of awareness came recently when I realized
that I was going to measure my progress as a human being not by any specific
success or failure but by the percentage of better choices I will make
over time.
"I decided that this was going to be my Year of Better Choices -- and hoped
that every year thereafter would be as well. How often do I choose to
exercise, even when I don't feel like it? Or to be of service to someone
else, when I don't have the time? Or to be strategic instead of simply busy?
Or to focus on something creative and inspirational instead of pandering to
my less noble impulses? Or to be frugal instead of lavish? Or lavish instead
of frugal?....
"Years ago, I had a great golf instructor who said, 'Don't worry about
your score or the balls that went in the water. Just know that every time
you play, you'll hit more great shots.' Good advice. So this year
I'm making at least a few more great shots than last. This attitude keeps
me in the game and getting better at it.
"When you stop reading this, you will choose what to focus on and what
to do next. Take your swing. You might really connect. And if you don't,
don't worry. You'll have a lot more chances before you go to sleep tonite."
