Who attends school age care?

_ Over 2 million children aged 6 through 16 attend school-age child care programs.

_ The vast majority of children attending school-age child care programs are in their early elementary years: 83% of school-age enrollees are in the kindergarten through third grade age group; 17% are in the fourth through sixth grades; and less than 1% are in seventh grade and above.

_ Although firm statistics are not available, most experts agree that the fastest growing segment of the school-age market is care for middle school children - children in grades five through eight.

_ In 1993, one third of the 1 million children served by federal child care assistance programs were school-age children.

_ In 1990, an estimated 3.4 million children aged 5 through 12 (12% of all children in this age group) are regularly left unsupervised, caring for themselves at least some time during the week.

Who provides school-age care?

_ Over 50,000 programs serve school-age children. Over two-thirds of these programs provide services both before and after school.
