When I Could Fly

As I sit at a friend’s son’s birthday party, I watch a young boy run by with a towel tied around his neck like a cape. His mother shouts out to him, “Johnny! What are you doing?” Johnny looks at her with a puzzled look on his face.


“I’m flying!” he exclaims, as if it was very evident what he was doing.


His mother calls back to him “Well stop it, you might break something.”


I love to sit and watch children play and interact. There is so much that we, as adults, can learn from them. Children have an astonishing sense of wonder. Their imaginations do not have the boundaries that adults have learned to follow. Children truly believe that they can. Just as Johnny knew he could fly, others believe they can be a super hero or, if they so choose, can even be a giraffe. I found during my time in the classroom as a teacher that children enjoy pretending to be a character that they have seen on television or the movie screen or a favorite family member or an important, powerful person in their lives.
