In part one and two of this series (Exchange, November/December 2006 and January/February 2007), we introduced some terms and tools for Web site design and offered a few helpful tips to get you started on developing a site for your early childhood program. In part three, we identify some Web site design best practices based on a scan of early childhood program sites, and we share tips for creating an effective, informative, and appealing Web site for your program that visitors will bookmark and return to frequently.

Tech Terms

• Web site design: The process of designing the content, user interface, look and feel, structure, navigation, and usability of a Web site.

• Content: The information, images and resources you provide on your site. Content is the reason people visit your site. The higher the quality and more relevant the content is, the longer they will stay, and the more likely they are to return.

• Navigation: Web site navigation refers to a collection of links, usually placed vertically on the left or horizontally on the top of the Web page, that are used to help visitors move around the site.
