Social media use in adults has skyrocketed from 5 percent to 79 percent in the last 15 years (Ortiz-Ospina, 2019). People spend on average almost 2.5 hours a day on social media, making it the perfect platform for advertising to new families and engaging with current families (Broadband Search, n.d.). As the majority of social media users are between the ages of 18 and 29 (Ortiz-Ospina, 2019), using these platforms can make your program more visible to young families. The average individual spends “three hours using his or her smartphone, most of which is spent on social media apps” (Huang & Su, 2018). This information is very relevant to child care programs, as it shows the importance of social media apps and the great impact they can have on the individual’s daily life. While many programs recognize the power of social media, guidelines on the creation of content, target audience, and frequency of posting can be helpful in determining which platform most closely meets the needs of the program, and is likely to yield the greatest impact for the program.
