In the summer of 1967, during the peak of their popularity, The Beatles shared with the world a simple statement about love. Delivered in the form of a song written by John Lennon, the notion that “love is everything” came through loud and clear, as evidenced not only by the fact that “All You Need Is Love” quickly made its way to the top of the music charts, but also, perhaps, by the fact that the word love—as mentioned in some permutation of the phrase “all you need is love”—was repeated no less than 100 times, accompanied by supporting lyrics suggesting that it is love that makes it possible to do, save, make, know, learn, and be anything you want. More than 50 years later, with the song “All You Need Is Love” still well-loved, it seemed worthwhile to go a bit deeper and explore the question of whether The Beatles had it right.
