The root of courage is coeur, French for heart. For me, the core meaning of courage comes from within as strength of heart. Over the past few months, as the world has responded to the COVID-19 crisis, the mayor of Los Angeles has concluded his daily news briefings with the phrase fuerza y amor, strength and love. There is great strength in love. For me, the conscious decision to be the presence of love is the most powerful influence you can have in any situation in your life and in this world. This inner decision and its fulfillment in action are how I relate to the idea of courageous leadership. 

In our early education program, three principles guide our work:

  • Take care of yourself so you can take care of others.
  • Do not hurt yourself and do not hurt others.
  • Respect everything in the environment and use everything to help you grow.

Taking care of yourself and using everything to help you grow can be especially challenging when faced with adversity. And yet, it is this focus that builds resilience and strength of heart.  Self-care involves physical, emotional, mental and spiritual care.
