Box: iPads Down and Then iPads Up

Ms. G is sitting on the floor in front of her kindergarten class with an interactive whiteboard behind her. She has just told her children, “iPads down” and the children are listening intently to her as she reads them a printed book about an urban farm garden. After a brief discussion, they look at pictures on the whiteboard of gardens from around the world. They finish by looking at pictures they took of their school garden last year and reflecting on the similarities and differences of their urban gardening experience to some of the pictures they saw and the book they read. Ms. G then takes out her own iPad and introduces a new drawing app by showing the children the many tools in the app and reminding them how she found the app on her iPad. She instructs the children to put their “iPads up,” find the app and design their own garden. Ms. G can see the children are excited to explore this new app so she provides extra time for them to explore all of its capabilities and limitations.
