Longtime friend of Exchange Billie Young was a pioneer in the field of early childhood education in Washington state and an inspiration to many. She died of cancer January 8, 2021. Her colleagues offer these remembrances of a woman dear to many. We offer our sympathies to her family and her many friends and colleagues. 

Billie often commented that she was blessed to have worked in a field of her choosing, filled with her passion for serving children and families, and pursuing social equity. From her time as an English literature teacher in Traverse City, Michigan, to her courageous move to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, where she earned a degree in social work, she always pursued excellence. Her decades of work for the City of Seattle helped shape early childhood education both in quality and capacity, generating models for other cities across the country. 

Billie was creative, using her innate curiosity to inspire new opportunities for youth in afterschool programs across Washington and the United States.
