Modern technology first came into the Dugan home in 1984 in the form of a Commodore 64 computer in birthday gift wrap. Book reports and family newsletters were written on it, low-resolution baseball games played on it and one of our favorite programs featured a tiny computerized man living in a tiny computerized house with a tiny dog that needed to be fed and walked regularly. It was a new world, and we were all eager to learn how to use it, with varying degrees of success. 

Fast forward more than 30 years as we observe our toddler niece Jane, who is one of the generation we call “digital natives” – children who have never experienced the non-digital world. Jane knows how to find and use whatever entertainment she wants by swiping or tapping the screen of her parents’ phones or iPad. She will be well equipped for her world.
