Eamon is the newest member of our extended family. We have not met him yet, but thanks to the internet we receive photos every day. I especially love those where his Mom or Dad is reading to him. At 4 weeks old, his enormous eyes light up and even his tiny toes are animated. Eamon comes from generations of readers and writers, and I expect that he will be one, too. He will make his own friends from among the characters he meets in a new generation of books, and they and their stories will be lifelong companions. Because reading does matter.
For this, my final Reading Matters column for Exchange, I have chosen some recent books about, well, books themselves, and the best place to find them. Looking back, I realize that about 95 percent of the books I have featured over the past 10 years have come from the public library, where there are thousands more equally wonderful books about all kinds of things, and there are librarians who care very much about helping you find just the right book.
