Item #1: The National Education Association takes out ads in magazines ranging from Fortune to American Heritage championing the preschool years (see "How Long Does It Take a Five-Year-Old To Get Ready for School?," page 7).

Item #2: President Bush announces his America 2000 plan with its first goal being "All children in America will start school ready to learn" (see "People and Places in the News," page 16).

Item #3: In 1990, four out of five states allocate funds for early childhood programs (see "The Exchange Top 35," page 12).

Item #4: In the 1990 Child Care Information Exchange Status of Child Care Survey, the number one threat identified by both for profit and non profit center directors was "the funding of early childhood programs by public school systems" (see Exchange issues 77 and 78).
