Plants are one of the most vibrant and exciting parts of a natural playscape. They shape, define, and characterize children’s experience of the outdoor space. Plants provide the raw material for imaginary play and sensory stimulation to curious young brains. Living side by side with children, plantings become neighbors and playscape family members. They grow and change as the children do and teach many lessons throughout the seasons.

Gardening

Children’s gardens are an invaluable tool for teaching about science, food, time, responsibility, and life. Children can see the entire process of life unfold in one growing season. They can plant seeds in the spring, enjoy the bounty at harvest time, and feel proud of themselves for making it happen. Crops can even be grown year-round in many areas. What a great way to learn about the seasons and cycles of nature!

Low planter boxes can be home to experimental garden plots. What you decide to plant is up to the children and you: is it neat rows of edible nasturtiums, a tall forest of corn or sunflowers, or a lettuce and carrot landscape?
