The role of an early childhood educator is a complex one. We must wear many hats if we are going to be effective in working with the children entrusted in our care. Although the children are our primary focus, it is important for early childhood educators to understand the significant role that we play in the lives of the parents and other family members associated with our children. We take ownership for "our children," as we affectionately like to call the children enrolled in our classes, however, too often we dissociate ourselves from the most important people in their lives, their parents. When we embrace the concept of educating the whole child, we must also embrace the concept that in order for us to effectively work with the child, we must also be able to effectively work with their parents.

As teachers we are often the first ones to notice problems in parent-child relationships, therefore it is important that we realize the critical role we can play in assisting families in resolving issues and getting the help that they need.
