Back-up care is both the oldest and newest form of child care. Since time began, moms have gotten sick or for some reason have been unable to care for their young ones. And during those times, grandmothers, brothers, aunts, and neighbors have stepped in to meet the need.

Today, parents need back-up care when their regular child care arrangements are not available. The nanny is sick, grandma needs a vacation, the center used daily is closed for a holiday, or a host of other reasons. The more fragile the permanent child care arrangement, the more often back-up care is needed. Parents cannot always take time from work when these needs �" planned or unplanned �" arise. The need to find a secondary arrangement �" especially when the change occurs unexpectedly �" is often stressful for the entire family.

In recent years, back-up or emergency care has joined the list of services offered in child care centers. Some centers make this care available to parents on a space available basis: a parent needing a day or week of care calls the center and if there is an unused permanent space, the arrangement is made.
