Yes, I mean it! Hit the floor and become the type of teacher young children adore. A teacher who joins in and facilitates play, a guide, a coach, a cheerleader, a comrade in learning, a valued (and cherished) play partner. At least once in a while, slough off that aloof, objective observer demeanor. Jump from the block play sidelines and join in the excitement of creation! It's not undignified to play in earnest with children. And don't worry, you will still be "teaching," but it will be in a style that is better suited to how young children learn.

During involved and extended block play, learning takes place at a rampant rate. Most importantly, it is meaningful and enjoyable learning because the children construct their own problems and solutions as they develop block building strategies from personal thoughts, imaginations, and desires. All that learning means block play is serious business in early childhood programs; but who says that at the same time it can't be enthralling and intrinsically rewarding FUN - for children AND teachers?!
