I have always been somewhat amazed at the people, companies, agencies, schools, centers, and a host of others that inhabit the early care and education space that bemoan their circumstances but do little, if anything, to make a definitive change. In fact, in most cases, any change that is made, such as dismissing a teacher, director, or president, is followed by hiring what was just fired. Somehow we think that if we keep doing what we’re doing we’ll end up with a different result. I believe Dr. Phil might inquire as to, “How’s that working for you?”

The fear of change �" or comfort with the status quo �" seems to grip our field. The idea of stepping back from what we’re doing and looking objectively at what we are attempting to achieve might indicate that change is necessary. Whether it be a teacher whom parents love (but is internally toxic to staff morale) or a janitor who isn’t good (but we excuse because “He’s getting better”), we are all too often hesitant to pull the trigger.
