Directors Get the Most from Parents in South America

Ecuador: Several Ecuadorian centers have initiated a method of promoting strong parent involvement and program allegiance as a cost reduction approach for program equipment. Parents are heavily involved in the design and production of numerous pieces of child care equipment within the center.

As part of an effort to gain greater "buy-in" for parents, while at the same time educating them to the aims of their child's program, parents receive training in "toy and equipment" building. A quarterly contest is held by the Milagros center in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The center displays the projects of the parents and builds teamwork between the director, teachers, and parents. The approach, which began in low-income areas as solely an equipment producing technique, has now been adopted by higher income communities for its parent education and involvement value.
