I remember clearly the very first time I applied for a professional position. I was newly graduated and well armed with a degree in elementary education. I searched the library before meeting with a local elementary principal for tips that would enhance my interview performance and optimize my chances for getting the job.

Dressed for success and fully primed, I entered the interview room with what I hoped would approach confidence. I repeated the tips to myself as I took my seat in front of a large oak desk.

"Exude confidence." Check.

"Look them straight in the eye." Check.

"Don't fidget." Check.

The interview proceeded in a fairly predictable way. As it was obviously coming to a close, I remembered the last tip.

"Lean forward and toward the interviewer to demonstrate interest and confidence."

As I began to answer the final question about my professional goals, I engaged the mechanics of the last tip. I leaned forward and placed my elbow on the corner of the desk - or at least ...
